The Shed & Windscreen Projects
Saturday, 22 August 2009 18:26

I don’t know the history of the NTC storage shed but I heard that it was built many years ago as a project by the local high school. If anyone has more information on this, I would appreciate hearing from you. Over the years, the cedar shake roof deteriorated to the point that there were large holes right through wood.

On a very hot August 1st, a work group consisting of Hubert Nyst, Mike Hartley, Bill Elasoff, and myself began the task of replacing the roof. The old shakes were removed and the roof was covered with plywood and then tarpaper. The shape of the roof made for a lot of cutting and fitting of the plywood so the rebuilding was a slow and took up a full day. At the same time, Bruce Cottingham and Steve Forte installed the new windscreen on the fencing along the north side of the courts. This screen has effectively reduced the glare from the white storage shed that the golf club built last year.

On August 3rd, an almost as hot a day, a work group of Hubert, Mike, Bruce, and myself returned to complete the roof by installing asphalt shingles over the tar paper. Barring disaster, the new roof should last for 40 years. On behalf of the NTC executive, I would like to thank the volunteers who responded to my request for help with these projects.

Now that the roof has been replaced, we would like to complete the shed project this year by getting the exterior walls cleaned and re-stained. Over the past few years it has been mainly some of the “senior” club

members who have worked on this project and others such as the lighting rebuild and court resurfacing. It would be great if some of the “younger” members would volunteer to take on the completion of these shed repairs. The club will provide the materials and equipment needed for this project; we just need some members to do the work. If you are willing to be part of this work group, give me a call (359-7766) or send an email to ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Nelson Tennis Club!

The Nelson Tennis Club has operated as a non-profit, community sports club for over 30 years. It is located on the grounds of the Granite Pointe Golf Club. There are three well maintained, lighted courts with outstanding views of Nelson, the Kootenay River and Kokanee Glacier Park.  Although the Tennis Club is under independent management from that of the Golf Course, members have access to the golf club facilities, providing change rooms, lockers, and a restaurant with food and beverage services.

The club has a small, elected executive for its operation while other volunteer members help maintain the courts and organize play or tournaments. A hired coach runs the Summer Junior Tennis Program and provides instruction for adult players. The playing season lasts from April through November. During the year, a variety of instructional programs and tennis activities are offered. Playing time is not limited unless members are waiting, at which time court use is restricted to one hour.
